Breast Cancer Diet Connection

Breast Cancer - Diet Connection

I appreciate the opportunity to address one of my favorite subjects - “Preventing disease by living a healthy lifestyle” A healthy lifestyle has several facets of properly balanced daily activities, such as healthy sleep habits, healthy exercise habits, healthy eating habits and avoiding toxic pollutants. These core principles are the personal responsibility of each and every person. “Someone else can’t do it for you”, you should and must take a proactive position to prevent disease before in begins, first in yourself and if you are responsible for others, in those you love or have responsibility over.

Diet is one of the founding principles of a healthy lifestyle. Without a healthy diet, your health is greatly compromised, even if you sleep and exercise properly! Our diet is the literal building materials for our body. If we eat unhealthy food, we can never expect to be truly healthy. There is no more powerful medicine, no better medical procedure or better medical protocol to provide good health than a healthy diet!!

As Americans we must take the time to educate ourselves about these principles. It is apparent that our health care providers can’t do it, our schools are not providing this vital information, our government and privately funded researchers are often influenced by those who do not have your best interest at heart. Therefore it is up to us, individually to read and study these global issues.

T. Colin Campbell, PhD, prefaces his highly acclaimed book - “The China Study” Published this year by saying:

“By any measure, American’s health is failing! We spend for more, per capita, on healthcare than any other society in the world, and yet 2/3 of Americans are overweight, and more than 15 million Americans have diabetes. We fall prey to heart disease as often as we did thirty years ago. The War on Cancer, launched in the 1970s, has been a miserable failure. Half of all Americans have a health problem that requires taking a prescription drug every week, and more than 100 million Americans have high cholesterol.

1/3 of the children in this country are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. Our kids are increasingly falling prey to a form of diabetes that use to be seen only in adults, and children now take more prescription drugs than ever before. These issues all come down to three things: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

Our health delivery system is one which has been focused on disease and illness treatment. This general philosophy is now beginning to be understood as misguided and not working. As Americans become more educated, healthcare consumers are driving this industry into new directions of prevention, and conservative health care management.

I would like to share with you some of the most pertinent and clearly understood facts which are unmistakable scientific findings about the prevention of breast cancer.

I would like to draw your attention to the findings of the late Dr. Ken Carroll - professor at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. This study showed a very impressive relationship between dietary fat and breast cancer. This represents a world wide demographic review of diet and breast cancer. Dr. Campbell in his book - “The China Study” points out that the US has produced some research which confuses the issue due to some flawed study design, and misconception. However, worldwide research is quite clear about these issues.

To give you the nuts and bolts information, boiled down to the basics of what is most important for you to know, would be to eat a whole foods, plant-based diet, while minimizing the consumption of refined foods, added salt and added fats. This is the diet science that has been found to be consistent with the greatest health and lowest incidence of not only breast cancer, but heart disease, many other cancers, obesity, and a host of other Western diseases.

Research suggest eating all you want of healthy foods - getting lots of variety of any whole, unrefined plant-based food. Fruits, Vegetables in all variety - (flowers -broccoli, cauliflower, stems and leaves- spinach, artichokes, kale, lettuce, cabbage, swiss chard, collard greens, celery, asparagus, mustard greens, brussels sprouts, turnip greens, beet greens, etc), Roots - (potatoes, beets, carrots, turnips, onions, garlic, ginger. Leeks, radish, rutabaga), legumes- (green beans, soybeans, peas, peanuts, adzuki beans, black beans, black-eye peas, garbanzo, kidney beans, lentils, pinto beans white beans etc) mushrooms - (white button. Baby bella, cremini, portobelo, shiitake, etc.), Nuts - (walnuts, almonds, macadamia, pecans, cashew, hazelnut, pistachio etc), whole grains such as( wheat, rice, corn, millet, sorghum, rye, oats, barley, buckwheat, etc.)

Minimize - refined carbohydrates - (Pastas - Except whole grain varieties, white bread, crackers, sugars and most cakes and pastries. ) Added vegetable oils - (corn oil, peanut oil, olive oil), Fish- (salmon, tuna, cod)

Avoid - meat -(steak, hamburger, lard), Poultry - (chicken, turkey) Dairy-(cheese, milk, yogurt), Eggs - (eggs & products with a high egg content - Mayonnaise)

In conclusion, it is well documented that a healthy dietary lifestyle has enormous benefits including:

Live longer Look and feel younger

have more energy lose weight

lower your blood cholesterol prevent and even reverse heart disease

lower your risk of prostate, breast and other cancers

preserve your eyesight in later years prevent and treat diabetes

avoid surgery in many instances vastly decrease the need for pharmaceuticals

keep your bones strong avoid impotence

Avoid stroke Prevent kidney stones

keep your baby form getting type 1 diabetes Alleviate constipation

lower your blood pressure Avoid Alzheimer’s

The price for these benefits - “change you diet” You can do it! Any questions?
