Hyperbaric Treatment of Carbon Monoxide Toxicity

Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs when carbon monoxide builds up in the blood. When too much carbon monoxide is in the air, the body replaces the oxygen in the red blood cells with carbon monoxide. This can lead to serious tissue damage, or even death.

  1. "Carbon monoxide is gas that has no odor, taste or color. Burning fuels, including gas, wood, propane or charcoal, make carbon monoxide. Appliances and engines that aren't well vented can cause the gas to build up to dangerous levels. A tightly enclosed space makes the buildup worse.

Anyone exposed to carbon monoxide needs to get into fresh air and seek medical care right away. Call emergency medical services (EMS) or dial 911 right away for someone who's in a coma or can't respond.

Symptoms

Carbon monoxide poisoning affects the brain and heart the most. Exposure over time might lead to symptoms that can be mistaken for the flu without the fever. Clearer symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include:

  • Headache.

  • Weakness.

  • Dizziness.

  • Nausea or vomiting.

  • Shortness of breath.

  • Confusion.

  • Blurred vision.

  • Drowsiness.

  • Loss of muscle control.

  • Loss of consciousness.

Symptoms related to the nervous system and brain can come on after recovery from carbon monoxide poisoning. The risk of these is higher in people who lost consciousness from the carbon monoxide and older people. Symptoms might include:

  • Memory loss.

  • Personality changes.

  • Movement problems.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can be especially dangerous for people who are asleep, drugged or drunk. Carbon monoxide can cause brain damage or death before anyone realizes there's a problem."

MHBOT is simple and safe treatment. Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) is a natural therapy in which a person is exposed to increased atmospheric pressure inside an inflatable chamber. The typical pressure reaches between 1.1 and 1.4 atmospheres, which can be expressed as 1-4 pounds per square inch. The increase in pressure allows more oxygen to reach the body’s cells, delivering a multitude of healing and therapeutic benefits.

2. "The mechanism of action of HBO2 is not only to cause more rapid displacement of the CO from hemoglobin and generate normal oxyhemoglobin in the red blood cell but the oxygen delivery to the tissue is also increased by the oxygen that is dissolved in the plasma. The other benefit of HBO2 is to reduce the adherence of neutrophils on the damaged endothelium of the blood vessels in the brain, which reduces tissue edema and reduces lipid peroxidation. The extra oxygen that is delivered to the tissue also helps to reduce the CO bound to the cytochrome proteins in the mitochondria of the cells and contributes to restoring oxidative phosphorylation, which neurons are especially dependent upon for normal function and survival from the ischemic insult. It is also controversial as to the number of HBO2 treatments and what is the best treatment profile."

Bottom line, HBOT is safe and helpful, you would treat with the number of treatment required to resolve symptoms related to CO poisonings 2-8 visits with most people experiencing resolution around visit 4
