Am I Overweight and Will This Hurt Me?
Your body has 30 to 40 billion fat cells. Each is like a collapsible thin-walled tank. If you eat calories that you don’t need for immediate energy, most of the extras go to into these cells and are stored as fat. You have an almost unlimited capacity to store fat, and that can have a profound effect on your body and your health. That’s particularly true if the fat is stored around your abdomen. Shortness of breath may be the first sign of strain placed on your body by excess fat. That’s because as fat accumulates, it can crowd the space occupied by your organs. Fat accumulation in your abdomen may eventually make it difficult for you to even breathe comfortably while siting because it limits space for your lungs to expand.
As a Chiropractic Physician, I see daily the effects of being over weight in patients who carry a constant burden on their back and legs which aggravates joints leading to osteoarthritis. In addition to being overweight, it also places you at a much higher risk for type 2 diabetes. Your liver makes more triglycerides and cholesterol if you’re overweight, and you’re more vulnerable to cardiovascular disease, such as coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and stroke. Research clearly demonstrates an increased risk of cancer of the breast, prostate, colon and uterus, and your risk of developing gallstones increases. Wounds do not heal as well and infections occur more commonly in the overweight individual. In the end, being overweight can damage your changes of getting sick; it will hurt you.
BMI Weight Assessment
Finding your BMI, body mass index, is a more valuable measurement of body fat and health risks than your bathroom scale or weight-for-height tables. Higher BMI numbers are associated with higher blood fats, blood pressure and an increased risk of certain diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain cancers. BMI is a good but not perfect guide. For example, muscle weighs more than fat, and many people who are very muscular and physically fit - including some of the world’s supreme athletes - have high BMIs without the added health risks. The BMI is not an appropriate tool for pregnant women. Clearly, BMI doesn’t tell the whole story, however it is a good estimate of where you are.
